About the Community Directory

After much discernment, we took down our teacher directory in 2018 because we couldn’t support it and keep up with the requested changes. During the pandemic, we felt a renewed sense of a need for connection, and we discovered new user tools that may make maintenance easier. Most importantly, we have developed a light staffing model to support it.

Through our 20+ years, we’ve learned that the community of Christians who practice yoga is both wide and deep, encapsulating diverse backgrounds, journeys, and theological understanding. While some embrace the label of Christian, others struggle with claiming that same identity. Yet what we share is greater than our small self, our struggle with words, or our personal identity. We have each found ourselves, at some point, at the feet of Jesus, humbly bowing to all that we don’t know, grateful for any bits of understanding our own God-given body can soak in. We are grateful for the wordless answers and connection we might experience in the silence.

WHAT THIS DIRECTORY IS

It’s with this theological diversity in mind that CPY offers a directory of teachers, leaders, and resources who might serve as local companions and connection points for our journey towards the union that is our birthright as humans. There are other directories available through associations and publications, yet none fully engage the wide range of practices and resources available. A yoga therapist who has a strong faith yet doesn’t teach from an explicitly Christian worldview (we might call this a “Christian-sensitive” teacher) has a home here alongside a body prayer teacher who opens and closes class with scripture. A spiritual director who can help one discern yoga’s place in the spiritual journey sits next to a studio offering classes for Christians. There is no single “Christian yoga.” As with all we do, we strive to make room for both certainty and doubt. All journeys are welcome.

Christians Practicing Yoga has a large network of individuals who have spent years exploring the intersection of Christianity and yoga, who may not be actively teaching yoga or offering classes. This directory offers a means to connect these valuable resources to others who have questions about this intersection.

WHAT THIS DIRECTORY IS NOT

This directory is not an endorsement of any resource. With the exception of CPY volunteers, we do not verify the credentials or veracity of any listing. CPY encourages caution and discussion with all resources before engaging in any relationships.

A CPY volunteer is someone who has a relationship with Christians Practicing Yoga by volunteering their time. Most volunteers have attended at least one retreat (most more) or a series of workshops, and now chair or volunteer on an offering committee, write for the blog, volunteer as a board member or teacher, or as “behind the scenes” staff keeping our digital profile up-to-date. A CPY volunteer has an appreciation for the mission and has worked to further it.

Questions about a listing can be directed to directory@christianspracticingyoga.com.

WHAT WE HOPE FOR

We hope all Christians who practice yoga or wish to practice yoga will find companionship on the journey at the intersection of yoga and Christianity.
